Religious Education

Intent

At South Wootton Junior school we believe that Religious Education is an integral part of developing well rounded, responsible individuals who have the ability to make sense of and hold informed conversations about religion and world views around them.

We aim to enable pupils to have the knowledge, understanding and respect of religious and non-religious worldviews in order to be free and critical thinkers, able to make informed judgements about the important matters of religion and belief which shape the global landscape.

Our RE curriculum is centred around the Norfolk Agreed Syllabus 2019, which reflects our aims to:

- Know about and understand a range of religious and non-religious worldviews by learning to see these through theological, philosophical and human/social sciences lenses.

- Express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religious and non-religious worldviews through a multi-disciplinary approach.

- Gain and deploy skills rooted in theology, philosophy and the human/social sciences engaging critically with religious and non-religious worldviews.

Implementation

At South Wootton Junior School our scheme of work is guided by The Norfolk Agreed Syllabus 2019 which aims to produce religiously literate individuals through a multi-disciplinary approach. Each half term focuses learning on a different enquiry question based within each of the three disciplines: Theology, Philosophy and Human/Social Sciences.

Every year group is taught weekly discreet RE lessons, focusing on an in-depth investigation of Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and an encountering with Humanism, Buddhism and Sikhism.

Impact

We inform our assessment of learning by asking the question; ‘how well are our pupils able to hold informed and well-balanced conversations about religions and worldviews?’

We use formative, informal assessment within the lesson to inform our understanding of the progress of learning within the classroom. This might take the form of mini knowledge quizzes or individual written pieces developing individual thoughts and beliefs. Each class has a RE Floor Book which documents their learning and discussions throughout the year, this then travels with the class up the school so they can add to their learning journey.

Right to withdraw from RE

We offer a broad and inclusive RE curriculum which develops our pupils understanding of a range of religions and non-religious worldviews as part of a broad and balanced curriculum. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from RE lessons with the understanding that parents will then take on this responsibility. If you are considering withdrawing your child from RE lessons, please contact the Headteacher.
