My Life at South Wootton Junior School

PHSE (Physical, Health, Society and Economic) and RSHE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education)

Intent

The intent of our PSHE and RSHE curriculum is to allow our children to become resilient, healthy, independent members of society, both now and in the future. The aim of My Life is to help children understand how they are developing socially and personally, as well as addressing social, cultural and moral issues that they encounter as part of growing up. We aim to provide our children with the awareness and respect for different cultures and understand local and global issues. In addition, our pupils are taught to be emotionally literate and express themselves articulately. Our pupils strive to display the super six learning behaviours in their learning and beyond.

Implementation

We hope that our My Life curriculum will support the physical, social, health and emotional side of our pupils as this should result in the academic outcomes that the school aims for.

PSHE and RSHE is taught both explicitly and implicitly through a range of activities such as, quizzes, debates, designing posters, role-play, labelling diagrams and discussions. At South Wootton Junior school, we ensure that the three core themes of My Life (health and wellbeing, relationships, living in the wider world) are covered progressively over the years. The school primarily uses the ‘My Life’ programme to deliver social and emotional learning skills along with relationships and sex education and the RSE Solutions Norfolk planning resource to deliver specific content on asking for help.

In addition, PSHE can be identified within other subjects in the curriculum. Within Science and Physical education children are taught about healthy and active lifestyles and healthy eating. Whilst within Computing children are taught to be safe and responsible online citizens. In Religious education children learn about the diverse cultures that exist beyond the school gates. In addition, in Geography we aim to ensure our pupils understand worldly issues such as climate change, global warming and natural disasters. PSHE is also present in English lesson for example in year 6 when the children study the suffragettes and women’s rights. Furthermore, during PE lessons teamwork and good sportsmanship is promoted.

Our My Life lessons are built to reflect the universal needs of all the children at South Wootton Junior school. as well as the specific needs of the children in our school and our local community. Our school planning has been ordered to enable teachers to start with topics that meet their children’s needs as well as spending time in the latter of the summer term preparing children for their progression into the next year group.

Impact

All the learning is recorded in a class My Life scrap book. It is hoped that PSHE will promote children to

- Participate in extra curricular activities both in and out of school. This is celebrated in weekly assemblies and newsletters.

- Understand democracy by raising issues and suggesting ideas to school council representatives who then take it to meetings run by Miss Newell.

- Show leadership through house captaincy, student council and head boy and girl.

- Have high self-esteem and confidence through completing weekly compliments lists for the ‘Pupil or the Week’ in each class.

Subject Overview

At South Wootton Junior school, PHSE and RSHE develops fully rounded children who are healthy, sociable, and emotionally literate. It covers three core themes: health and wellbeing, living in the wider world and relationships. My Life prepares children for life in modern Britain today as well as providing them with the skills and attitudes to become full and active citizens that reach their full potential in the future.

Opting Out of Sex Education

From September 2020, Relationships, Education and Health Education is compulsory for all pupils receiving a primary education. Although Sex Education in primary schools is not statutory, it is recommended by the Department of Education that all Primary schools have a Sex Education scheme of work in place. Parents have the option to withdraw their child from these sessions which we provide at the end of Year 6. If your child is in Year 6 and you are considering opting your child out of Sex Education, please contact the Head Teacher.
