PE at South Wootton Junior School

Intent

At South Wootton Junior School, we believe Physical Education is an important part of a child’s education. We want to teach and inspire our pupils how to lead a healthy lifestyle by educating them on the importance of exercise for their well-being. PE at our school is designed to be inclusive, so all children have the opportunity to learn and grow through physical education.

During a child’s time at South Wootton Junior school, they will be taught new skills and sports which they continue to develop during their time with us. In PE lessons, we aim to develop skills such as resilience, teamwork and communication, which are all fundamental skills used throughout a child’s education and their future. We also aim to give each child the opportunity to take part in competitive sports, including individual and team events, which offer benefits such as personal development and confidence.

Ultimately, our intent is to allow every child to participate, learn and grow through sport. We want them to develop a love of PE and understand the importance of exercise on their overall health and wellbeing.

Implementation

At South Wootton Junior School, each child will receive 2 hours of PE each week. All year groups follow the GetSet4PE scheme, which includes coverage of the National Curriculum and demonstrates a clear progression of skills and knowledge for all children.

In Year 3, all children have a term of swimming lessons taught by a swimming instructor at a local pool. These lessons focus on teaching crucial skills and self-rescue techniques. During the summer term, all year groups have a swimming session to further build on their skills and confidence. In addition to our weekly PE lessons, we run lunchtime sport activities and various after school clubs.

Each academic year, we also aim to give as many children as we can the opportunity to take part in a competition and represent the school. We attend competitions organised by the local school partnership. Within school, we run various inter-house competitions providing children with a chance to work with other children in their house team.

Impact

As a school, we assess children’s progress in physical education by using the National Curriculum guidance, which focuses on how well each child has acquired new skills during their sport specific lesson. This helps teachers to design lessons to support our pupils to improve their skills further. Teacher observations are also made during PE lessons, which are used to inform their future planning.

Each year, we also run a pupil survey in school which allows pupils to have a voice about sports they would like to see taught in PE lessons, or any sports they would like to participate in. We value this information and use it to provide children with opportunities to experience new sports and events.
