Art
Intent
At South Wootton Junior School, we believe that every child is entitled to an exceptional art education. The art curriculum encourages them to use different disciplines and techniques such as drawing, painting, sculpting, as well as other selected craft skills, like collage, printing, weaving, patterns and clay craft. Children will also develop their knowledge of famous artists, designers and craft makers, cultivating and critiquing an understanding of history and culture.
Implementation
The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
- Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
- Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Our Art curriculum is taught using Access Art’s scheme of work. This ensures that previous skills and knowledge are returned to and built upon. This allows pupil progress to be developed as they will be able to undertake more detailed tasks, whilst tackling easier tasks with some understanding and ease. So that pupils take part in a range of art skills and tasks, topics are taught in blocks and relevant to each year group with particular themes, adding context to learning. So that work and artistic talent can be showcased across the school, there is the progression of skills presented within sketchbooks each year, work on display within classrooms and across the school's communal areas and corridors. In class, different local artists’ work is discussed and evaluated as well as great artists and designers in history.
Impact
At South Wootton Juniors the impact of this teaching and learning can be seen through:
- Our children creating excellent pieces of art that meet the learning objectives.
- Our children's use of their learning and development in other areas of the curriculum, showing that the knowledge and understanding of these are embedded.
- Our children's ability to provide feedback through peer and teacher assessment.
- Our children can self-reflect and assess their own work.
- The progression of skills with the children's sketchbooks.
- Pupil voice where children can talk clearly about the techniques and learning, as well as sharing their understanding of artists.
