Sport plays a large part in school life at S.W.J.S. Opportunities are provided in school for children to participate and learn a range of Physical Education skills through the realPE scheme of work which develops the whole child through personal, cognitive, social, creative, physical and health and fitness activities. In addition, children are able to learn skills to participate in a range of sports and activities, including Invasion Games, Gymnastics, Dance, Swimming, Net and Wall Games, Striking and Fielding, Outdoor Adventurous Activities and Athletics.
The children have the opportunity to participate in 5 hours of P.E. per week which includes 2 hours of P.E. within curriculum time. Furthermore the Year 6 children attend a residential visit to ’Lea Green’ in Derbyshire towards the end of the year and Y5 attend 'Hilltop' for the day, both outdoor activity centres.
In recognition of the large part South Wootton Junior plays towards PE within the school and the local community, we have been awarded the distinction of the High Quality PE and Sport award, which recognises the quality and quantity of sport the school provides. In addition, the school has been accredited as a Football Association Charter School, for its achievements and provision of football coaching, and has been chosen to be part of the ’chance-to-shine’ scheme in cricket. Furthermore, the school has been awarded ’Activmark’ and the Sainsbury's School Games Gold Award again both recognising the school’s provision of sport.
Current clubs offered in school as free extra-curricular activities include: Football (girls and boys), Netball, Tag-rugby, Multi-skills, Athletics, Rounders and Kwik Cricket.
All of our sports teams have recently been successful both locally in league and cup competitions as well as representing West Norfolk in numerous events at county level (Tag-rugby, Athletics, football, Kwik cricket and swimming). Although competitive, each team pride themselves in the manner in which they play each game with a large emphasis placed on fair play and sportsmanship.
We have used our PE and Sport Grant Allocation to purchase a Multi-Use Games Area and new hall apparatus which are being used by the whole school to further extend the quality of PE provision both in lessons and beyond the curriculum. In addition, the money has been used to create a Forest School area which the children have access to during designated curriculum time.
